A sunny day out in the City of Culture!
Our team of 8 runners met up on a scorching hot morning in the city centre to get ready for the 8th annual Hull 10km. The team consisted of some race regulars, occasional runners and Jenni doing her first ever event of this kind!
After a pre race team photo (we reckoned the post race photos were not going to be too flattering) everyone lined up in their appropriate starting pens in blazing sunshine and heat that was already over 20 degrees – not ideal running conditions!
When the gun went off it was a relief to get running and we headed out of the city centre towards Victoria Dock. The residents did a sterling job keeping the runners cool by spraying us with hosepipes which helped enormously in the rising temperatures.
Turning onto the waterfront a slight breeze provided some relief up to the half way point at The Deep. There was a great atmosphere around the Marina with spectators enjoying the sunshine and we all got a much needed boost with cheers from our chief supporter Tracey.
The streets were lined with crowds coming back into the city centre and the water tanker spraying the runners in Queen Victoria Square gave us a cool down after last couple of hot miles.
All that was left then was to run around the new Hull New Theatre and then past Queens Gardens and turn into the finishing straight which was packed with cheering spectators. The relief of finally crossing the line was immense and the fantastic medal was much deserved by everyone… congratulations (and sweaty hugs) all round for a great team effort.
Same time next year??
This weekend shows no sign of slowing down with Abi, Helen, Lorna, Dave P, Dave W and Julian taking on the National 3 Peaks Challenge in 24 hours, Vikki raising money at the Race for Life Pretty Muddy event and Gavin taking on the Total Warrior obstacle course in Leeds! Definitely a case of work hard play hard!
