Our business operates across international markets, but our roots remain firmly in Hull.
For J. Marr, being a global business has never meant losing sight of where we came from. Our heritage, our people and the values that have shaped the business continue to influence how we work today.
From Hull to the world
J. Marr has been trading since 1979, building experience across the frozen seafood industry and developing relationships across international markets.
Today, our work takes us far beyond the UK. We trade across global markets, working with customers and suppliers in countries around the world.
But wherever our business takes us, Hull remains an important part of our identity.
It is where our business is rooted, where many of our people are based and where much of our international trading activity is coordinated.
Local values, global relationships
There can sometimes be a perception that international businesses need to become increasingly distant as they grow.
Being rooted in a place can provide a strong sense of identity and continuity, while international experience brings a broader perspective.
For J. Marr, these two things work alongside each other.
Our approach to business is shaped by values that are straightforward: service, integrity, relationships and doing things properly. These values are just as relevant when we are working with a customer or supplier thousands of miles away as they are when we are working with someone closer to home.
Understanding different markets
Operating internationally means recognising that every market is different.
Customers have different requirements. Supply chains operate differently. Buying behaviours, cultures and business practices vary from one country to another.
Our role is not simply to connect one market with another. It is to understand those differences and build relationships that work within them.
That takes experience, market knowledge and, above all, people who understand the importance of listening.
Heritage with a forward focus
Heritage is valuable when it provides a foundation for the future.
Our history gives us experience and perspective, but international trade continues to evolve. New markets emerge, customer expectations change and technology creates new ways of working.
That means a long history cannot be an excuse to stand still.
For us, it is about taking what has worked — our relationships, our knowledge and our values — and continuing to develop the business around them.
Staying connected
Being global can sometimes be reduced to a list of countries or markets.
Our people regularly travel to meet customers, suppliers and industry partners, whether at industry events or in the markets where we trade. Those face-to-face conversations help us stay close to the industry and understand the people behind the businesses we work with.
It is one of the ways we combine our local roots with our international outlook.
Our world, and yours
From our base in Hull, our business reaches markets around the world.
That international reach is something we are proud of, but it is our people, relationships and values that give it meaning.
Our roots provide the foundation. Our global relationships provide the reach. And our focus remains on building a business that can continue to grow for the long term.
From Hull to the world, with the same values at the heart of how we work.
