From Severn to Humber: Helen’s Two-Day Challenge for Sailors’ Children’s Society
18th September 2025
This September, our colleague Helen Simpson turned ambition into achievement. Helen cycled more than 212 miles in 2 days, starting at the iconic Severn Bridge in the Southwest and finishing at the Humber Bridge in East Yorkshire.
Helen conquered challenging landscapes, shifting winds, unpredictable weather, and back-to-back 100-mile days, all with one purpose: to raise crucial funds for the Sailors’ Children’s Society (SCS).
The two-day journey delivered plenty of memorable moments. Early on, a loose dog caused one rider to fall, thankfully without serious injury, but it did add an unexpected hurdle to an already demanding challenge. Later, heavy rain turned sections of the route into rivers, testing the team’s resilience and resolve.
To keep spirits high, the Sailors’ Children’s Society shared messages and short videos from some of the families they support. Riders heard first-hand how donations made a difference.
Why Sailors’ Children’s Society Matters
For more than 200 years, SCS has supported the children of seafarers, whether from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, fishing fleets, or offshore sectors during times of tragedy or crisis. Their help can include:
- School uniforms and warm winter clothing
- Weekly hardship grants
- Emotional and practical support for families facing bereavement or illness
Peddling for a Purpose
The Bridge-to-Bridge ride brought together Helen’s key passions. As a dedicated long-distance cyclist, she welcomed the physical test, but just as important, the event supported a cause that resonates personally and professionally.
“My father was in the Merchant Navy but died when I was young… I realised that some aspects of the charity’s work would really have helped us as a family at the time,” she explained.
With J Marr International’s own maritime heritage and Andrew Marr International role as an Anchor Partner of the Sailors’ Children’s Society, the 212-mile challenge was a natural fit, uniting Helen’s love of cycling with a cause close to her heart and aligned with our company’s values.
